Selonda began operating its first fish farm in 1981 in beautiful Selonda Bay located in Northeastern Peloponnesus, cultivating at the time only a few thousand Sea Breams.
Within ten years Selonda became one of the leading fish farming companies in Greece and in the following decade achieved the status of a major player in the European aquaculture industry.
In 1994 Selonda was the first fish farming company in Europe to be listed on the stock exchange. Investing in the trust that the shareholders showed in the company, Selonda expanded its operations through international partnerships to Singapore, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and Turkey. In 2011 Selonda was recognized by the ICAP Group as one of the “Strongest Companies in Greece” and a “True Leader”.
Over the past three decades, Selonda has been a pioneer in the development of Greece’s highly successful and export-oriented Sea Bass and Sea Bream industry.
Greece is the leading global producer of Sea Bass and Sea Bream with a total production volume of 120.000 tons in 2010, which accounts for approximately 50% of the total production volume worldwide.
Farmed Sea Bream and Sea Bass have become Greece’s leading agricultural export products. The annual value of Greece’s exports of Sea Bass and Sea Bream is over 400 million euros, surpassing traditional agricultural products such as olive oil. As a result of the country’s significant exports of Sea Bass and Sea Bream, Greece is the only country in the European Union with a positive seafood trade balance.
Today, with 30 years of experience, Selonda operates 46 sea-cage fish farms in Greece with an annual production capacity of more than 25.000 tons of Mediterranean Sea Bream (“Dorade Royale” / “Orata” / “Dorada” / “Tsipoura”) and Sea Bass (“Branzino” / “Loup de Mer” / “Lubina” / “Lavraki”).
Over 85% of the total volume of fish produced by Selonda is exported fresh, by truck or by airplane, to more than 20 countries worldwide.
Every week 300 to 400 tons of fresh Greek Sea Bass and Sea Bream produced by Selonda is exported to all the major European markets such as Italy, Spain, France, the UK, Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands, as well as to far-away destinations such as Russia, the USA and Canada. Selonda is the leading supplier of Sea Bass and Sea Bream to the markets of North America (USA and Canada), with exports of 20 tons of fresh Greek Sea Bass and Sea Bream every week flown in fresh by air directly from Athens to destinations spread out throughout the continent: New York, Miami, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles.
Almost all of the Greek Sea Bass and Sea Bream exported to the United States are consumed in the finest restaurants in places such as Manhattan and Miami because of the fish’s high quality, freshness, excellent taste and consistent availability around the year.
During the last 3 years, despite the global and domestic economic turmoil, Selonda has participated in innovative research projects and has been developing the technology and know-how for the successful farming of new fish species.
At the same time Selonda has invested in fish processing, developing new approaches in order to bring the healthy and tasty fresh fish we produce to even more households all over the world.
